20091216_08-SmallOn April 19th, 2010, Edith Hammond, our editor, celebrated her 95th birthday. Melvina gave us the heads up, and we asked her to please send flowers because she would know what Edith would enjoy. If any and all members would like to send her a belated birthday card, we know she would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks to everyone in advance.

The Northeast Region of the FMS (Fluorescent Mineral Society) is holding its fall meeting on November 14, 2009 at the GeoTech Center of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg, NJ. The meeting runs from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm, and will be followed from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm by a night dig on the Mine Run Dump, and in the Fill Quarry, Passaic Pit and “Saddle” area. Members from all FMS regions are invited, as are prospective FMS members.

Marc Zimmer, Ph.D., the Barbara Zaccheo Kohn ’72 Professor of Chemistry at Connecticut College, and author of the book Glowing Genes, will be the featured speaker. Dr. Zimmer will talk about biofluorescence. FMS members are also invited to give talks on subjects of their choice. Stuart Bingham will speak on historical fire starting techniques. Howie Green will give a slide presentation and mineral show-and-tell on his collecting trip to Langban, Sweden this past summer.

A mineral Trade-a-Thon extravaganza will take place, and attendees can make it known in advance what they have to swap and might want to acquire. An efficient mechanism to facilitate this is in the works. In the meantime, contact Howie via e-mail at: royalp53@verizon.net regarding your mineral swap fantasies.

The famous NE Region Lunch Players will be up to their usual culinary tricks, and new participants will be welcomed. A $10 donation to cover food and drink expenses is suggested.

Please RSVP to Richard Bostwick, FMS Vice President for the NE Region, at rbostwick@att.net for meeting and/or lunch attendance, menu coordination and participation, and to suggest or present topics at the meeting.
